Don't Be Afraid of the Schwa

The goal of this workshop is to share simple, yet effective multisensory activities that can be incorporated into the OG lesson plan that will help students become more proficient in decoding and encoding words that contain the schwa sound in the unaccented syllable.

The presentation will discuss multisensory activities that can be implemented to teach the most common vowel sound in the English Language. This presentation will include the following:

What is the schwa sound?
Why is it important to teach our students about the schwa sound?
When should we teach the schwa?
The difference between a syllable timed language and a stressed timed language
Accenting in multisyllabic words
How morphology can help with decoding and encoding words that have a schwa sound
Practicing the schwa sound in phrases, sentences, and connected text Interactive multisensory activities that can be used with students for practice
