OGA Associate Level Course Part 2 July 2026

The 70-hour (8-day) Associate Level course will address the history and structure of the English language. This course is divided into two sections:

Part 1 (35 hours and Part 2 (35 hours).

Part 1 is a prerequisite for this section.

Trainees will develop a deeper understanding of phonology, orthography, and advanced morphology. Written expression, vocabulary development, comprehension, and grammar will also be addressed. A variety of formal and informal assessments will be presented and analyzed. Trainees will learn how to develop a flexible Orton-Gillingham sequence and lesson planning strategies. There will be synchronous (live) and asynchronous (independent) work. This course follows the curriculum and guidelines of the Orton Gillingham Academy (OGA) coursework and can also be applicable towards certification for the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). Upon completion of the course, trainees may continue on to an optional 100-hour practicum working 1:1 with a student (at an additional cost).

Trainees will receive a certificate of completion for the coursework hours completed. They can only achieve OGA certification by completing all Academy requirements, including a practicum experience.

For teachers who hold a NY teaching certificate, CTLE hours can be provided because Kim Nau is an approved New York State CTLE sponsor. The course, practicum, and Academy acceptance, qualify the trainee to apply OG in a tutorial setting.

Upon completion of Associate Level coursework and all of the OGA requirements, the trainee is qualified to apply the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach with the skills to work in a 1:1 setting under the mentorship of an OGA Fellow. Once the practicum is complete and the application is approved by the OGA, trainees are Certified at the Associate Level by the OGA.

100 hours minimum supervised practicum
Occur over a minimum of eight consecutive months. Kim Nau requires that the practicum be completed between 8-15 months.
Work with a student, 1:1 for 40-60 minute lessons, at a minimum of twice a week, on nonconsecutive days, or 30-minute lessons four to five times a week
A minimum of 10 observations teaching complete lessons to one student (If you do 30- minute lessons, an observation consists of two consecutive lessons). Some trainees may require more than 10 observations. Written and oral feedback will be provided after each observation.
The practicum student does not need to have been formally tested, but relevant information from parents, teachers, and the educational history should demonstrate characteristics consistent with a primary diagnosis of language-based reading disorder/dyslexia. Reading difficulties should be the student’s primary issue; at the Associate level, an appropriate student should not have multiple comorbidities such as receptive or expressive language problems, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), behavioral difficulties, and/or low cognitive scores. An Associate level trainee should be working at a foundational level, e.g. sound/symbol, phonemic awareness, syllable division, and spelling rules/generalizations.

*There is an additional cost of $185 per observation to participate in the practicum. This fee is paid when each observation is submitted. The fee includes: reviewing the recording of the video lesson, written feedback, and a Zoom meeting to discuss progress.

Trainees are eligible to apply at the Associate A level upon completion of the coursework and practicum requirements (20-page student profile and lesson trio), assigned readings, a recommendation from the Fellow, and a second recommendation from someone familiar with your work.

Individuals who want to apply to the OGA must have a B.A. degree. There is a separate application fee of $200 required by the Orton-Gillingham Academy. This is paid once the practicum and all of the requirements are complete. There are also yearly dues of $110. There is a $60 nonrefundable fee if the application is deferred. The first year dues are included in the application fee. 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are required yearly to maintain membership in the OGA.

Orton-Gillingham Academy Coursework

OGA Associate Level Course Part 2 - 35 hours: 28 hours of coursework is synchronous (attended live) and 7 hours are asynchronous (videos, articles, assessments, and assignments). Part 1 coursework is a prerequisite for part 2.

Description
The Associate Level Part 2 course is available for individuals who have completed the Associate Level Part 1 Training. Trainees will review previously learned concepts along with the history and structure of the English language. Trainees will develop a deeper understanding of phonology, orthography, and advanced morphology. Written expression, vocabulary development, and grammar will be addressed. A variety of formal and informal assessments will be presented and analyzed. Trainees will learn how to develop a flexible Orton-Gillingham sequence and lesson planning strategies. This course follows the curriculum and guidelines of the Orton Gillingham Academy (OGA). Upon completion of 60 hours of Associate Level coursework and all of the OGA requirements, this qualifies trainees to apply the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach with the skills to work in a 1:1 setting under the mentorship of an OGA Fellow.

Certification
Trainees will receive a certificate of completion once the course and requirements are completed. They can only achieve OGA certification by completing all Academy requirements, including a practicum experience. A Bachelor’s degree (in any field) is required to receive OGA certification. If assignments are incomplete, or display a lack of understanding of course concepts, the participant may be asked to retake the course.

If teachers have a New York State teaching license, this course can also provide CTLE credit hours.

Payment Information
The course is $1,050. After the course, if you decide to complete the 1:1 Associate practicum, it is $185 for each observation (minimum of 10 observations). These 10 observations will be across the 100-hour practicum working 1:1 with a student with dyslexia. Courses fill up quickly. Your spot is not guaranteed until payment is received.

Materials
The Gillingham Manual by Anna Gillingham & Bessie Stillman is a required book for this course. Additional resources will be suggested, but they are optional purchases. Included in the course are printable handouts (100+ pages) in the form of PDFs. There will also be videos, articles, and other resources provided on the course platform.

Technology Requirements
Since this coursework is virtual, participants need to access Zoom with microphone and video access. The video must be on throughout the course to assure that the participant is in full attendance. We will be using an online platform to access the materials. Participants will be provided with printable handouts for the course, but they are also expected to take copious notes to make learning a multisensory process. It is expected that the handouts will be printed prior to the start of the course. The materials will be available until a month after the course is completed.

During the live course, Zoom breakout rooms will be implemented so that participants can work in teams on class assignments and activities. To maintain engagement, trainees will be asked to annotate (write) on the screen. Most laptops (other than Chromebooks) and iPads allow participants to write on the screen with their finger or a mouse.

Attendance
This course will not be recorded. Lateness and absences are not permitted. In the event of an emergency and a trainee is absent, the trainee will have to wait until the course is offered again to make it up.

Code of Ethics
Tools and strategies can be reused, but this coursework is my intellectual property. It is not to be redelivered by anyone. The course is for the user who purchased it and it cannot be modified, distributed, or shared. Participants cannot share their username and password for others to access the course or materials.

Refund Policy
If there is an illness or emergency prior to the start of the course, the balance will be refunded sans a $100 administrative fee. In the event of an emergency and the instructor needs to cancel, the course will be rescheduled. If the participant is unable to attend the rescheduled date, a full refund will be provided.

Indemnification Clause
Trainee agrees to indemnify and hold Fellow harmless from any liability, fee, cost, loss or damage suffered by Trainee as a result of claims, demands, costs or judgments against trainer arising out of any alleged act or omission associated with or occurring during the activities to be carried out pursuant to the obligations of this Agreement.
